This webquest is designed as a five week x 100 minute program (ideally 2 x 50 minute lesson blocks on different days) for year 6/7 students studying the environment, inparticular, biomes, their climates, the plants and animals found within them and what, if any, effect humans have had on the biome. The students will work in small groups with each group member having an active role as detailed on the "week 1, let's begin" page (accessed via the process page).
This topic provides an opportunity to incorporate excursions with valid educational purpose. Firstly an excursion to the Zoological Gardens in your local area enabes students to observe animals in simulated environments similar to where they would be found in the wild, as well as some of the plant life. An excursion to an aquarium offers similar outcomes as the Zoo, but for the aquatic environments. Alternatively, if residing in Perth or surrounding suburbs, Cicerello's have a fantastic informative excursion to their restaurant in Fremantle. They provide a guide who shows various sea creatures, some the students can touch, and then leads a guided walk to a nearby beach to see what the tide has washed up. It is a short, affordable 2 hour excursion with the option of lunch thrown in! Below is a link to an Inspiration mind map to outline possible learning avenues and activites as well as cross-curricula links.
